VW launches a new EV sub-brand exclusive for China

Introduction:
In a continued effort to expand its electric vehicle (EV) lineup and strengthen its presence in the Chinese market, Volkswagen has announced the launch of a new sub-brand within its ID EV family. The new sub-brand, named ID.Unyx, will be exclusive to China and will offer a range of electric models starting with a crossover coupe of the same name. This move is part of Volkswagen’s broader strategy to introduce 34 new models globally by 2030, with a particular focus on the rapidly growing Chinese EV market.

Under this sub-brand, Volkswagen plans to introduce five electric models by 2026, with the goal of attracting a younger, lifestyle-oriented demographic while retaining existing customers. The ID.Unyx models are designed to be intelligently networked electric vehicles that offer innovative features and sustainable mobility solutions. The first model, the ID.Unyx crossover coupe, will showcase a unique design with distinctive styling elements, showcasing Volkswagen’s commitment to modern and dynamic electric vehicles.

The ID.Unyx crossover coupe will be available in both single-motor rear-wheel drive and dual-motor all-wheel drive configurations, delivering power outputs of 281 hp and 335 hp respectively. Equipped with a 77.0-kwh battery pack, the models are expected to achieve an impressive 385 miles of range in CLTC testing. The unique design of the ID.Unyx sets it apart from other models in the ID family, featuring sharp body creases, a ribbed hood, and intricate detailing on the front and rear bumpers.

The ID sub-brand was first introduced in 2016 with the debut of the ID concept, which later led to the production of models such as the ID.3 and ID.4. Volkswagen has embraced a mix of numerical and named models within the ID family, each representing a distinct segment of the EV market. The addition of regional sub-brands like ID.Unyx and ID.UX signifies Volkswagen’s commitment to catering to specific market preferences and expanding its global EV presence.

Volkswagen’s decision to launch a China-exclusive sub-brand reflects the company’s strategic focus on the Chinese EV market, which is the largest in the world. By introducing models like the ID.Unyx and developing region-specific platforms like the China Main Platform (CMP), Volkswagen aims to establish a strong foothold in China’s rapidly evolving automotive landscape. Collaborations with local partners and innovative EV technologies further reinforce Volkswagen’s commitment to sustainable mobility solutions in China.

As Volkswagen continues to expand its electric vehicle portfolio and explore new opportunities in the Chinese market, the ID.Unyx sub-brand holds significant potential for the brand’s growth and success. By offering a range of electric models tailored to Chinese consumers’ preferences, Volkswagen is well-positioned to capture a larger share of the EV market in China and drive the adoption of sustainable transportation solutions. With the introduction of the ID.Unyx sub-brand, Volkswagen is poised to make a lasting impact on the future of electric mobility in China and beyond.
