Tesla Electric, SunRun Partner to Strengthen Texas Grid

Introduction:
Tesla Energy and SunRun have partnered to enroll customers in a program that will use Tesla Powerwall battery packs to support the Texas power grid during times of high demand. This initiative comes after recent severe weather events in Texas highlighted the need for reliable backup power solutions. The program offers incentives for customers to participate in the pilot program run by Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), ultimately benefiting both the participants and the grid as a whole.

Enrolling Customers in the Program

SunRun has already enrolled 150 of its customers in the program and plans to further increase enrollments. To participate, customers must have SunRun’s solar panels connected to Tesla Powerwall batteries and have chosen Tesla Electric as their electricity provider. This partnership aims to not only provide backup power to customers but also contribute to the stability and reliability of the Texas power grid.

Benefits for Participants

Customers who enroll in the program will receive $400 per Powerwall for participating for the 2024 calendar year. In addition to this incentive, SunRun will also earn incremental revenue from the program. This not only provides financial benefits to participants but also encourages the adoption of sustainable energy solutions that benefit the grid as a whole.

Supporting the Grid During Severe Weather

Battery backups such as Tesla Powerwall can play a crucial role in bolstering the grid during severe weather events. Recent hurricanes and winter storms in Texas have highlighted the vulnerability of the power grid, leading to widespread power outages. By incorporating home energy-storage systems into the grid, it becomes more resilient and better able to withstand disruptions caused by extreme weather.

SunRun’s Experience with Home Backup Batteries

While this is SunRun’s first pilot program in Texas, the company has experience with home backup batteries. SunRun is Ford’s preferred installer for the backup power system sold with the F-150 Lightning, demonstrating their expertise in integrating battery solutions with existing infrastructure. Their involvement in other programs, such as providing battery backup systems to low-income households in California, showcases their commitment to making reliable power solutions accessible to a wide range of customers.

Contributing to Grid Resilience and Sustainability

By enrolling in the program with Tesla Powerwall battery packs, customers are not only securing their own power supply but also contributing to the overall resilience and sustainability of the Texas power grid. This partnership between Tesla Energy, SunRun, and ERCOT demonstrates the potential for collaborative efforts to address challenges in the energy sector and create a more reliable and sustainable grid for the future.
