The push towards electrification in the automotive industry is gaining momentum, but not every automaker is taking the same approach. During a recent interview at the 2024 New York Auto Show, Nissan North America’s Senior Vice President and Chief Planning Officer, Ponz Pandikuthira, shared insights into Nissan’s strategy for EVs, PHEVs, and series hybrids.
**Nissan’s Approach to Series Hybrids**
Nissan’s electrification strategy includes the use of e-Power powertrains, which function as a series hybrid. With a small combustion engine generating energy to power the electric motor once the battery reaches a certain level, the series hybrid eliminates the need for a direct mechanical connection between the engine and wheels, reducing complexity and cost. Pandikuthira highlighted the potential for series hybrids in smaller vehicles like city-focused pickups and compact SUVs, such as the Nissan Surf-Out concept.
**Hybrids and Plug-In Hybrids**
For larger vehicles that spend a significant amount of time on highways, Pandikuthira suggested that plug-in hybrid powertrains might be more suitable. The Nissan Frontier, for example, is seen as a better candidate for a plug-in hybrid rather than a fully electric vehicle, as it offers the versatility needed for towing and long-distance driving. The executive emphasized the importance of at least 70 miles of real-world range for plug-in hybrids, noting that advancements in battery technology could enable this in the future.
**Focus on BEV**
While Nissan sees potential in electrifying larger vehicles like three-row crossover SUVs such as the Pathfinder, the cost implications are a crucial consideration. Pandikuthira emphasized the need for affordability in the $25,000 to $40,000 price range for lifestyle pickups, while larger vehicles like the Pathfinder could support a higher price point of $55,000 to $60,000 for electric powertrains. The decision on which body style to electrify first is driven by customer demand and price considerations.
Overall, Nissan’s approach to electrification reflects a carefully balanced strategy that considers the specific needs of different vehicle segments and customer preferences. By focusing on series hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and BEVs for various types of vehicles, Nissan aims to offer a diverse range of electric options that meet the needs of today’s drivers while anticipating future trends in the automotive industry.
