Introduction

The Nio-CATL Partnership
In their bid to advance electric car technology, Nio has teamed up with CATL to research longer-life EV batteries. The partnership aims to introduce this technology, particularly for Nio’s battery-swapping service. The joint venture will involve extensive discussions, tech breakthroughs, and innovations, facilitating the development of future Nio models equipped with batteries boasting much longer service lives.
Nio ES8 and Battery Longevity
Given the limited lifespan of batteries compared to the vehicles they power, Nio anticipates this to become an increasingly pertinent issue. By 2025-2032, nearly 20 million EV battery warranties are expected to have run out, given an average warranty period of eight years. However, Nio stands proudly at the forefront of battery-swapping technology, reporting that it has lengthened the serviceable lives of swappable batteries to retain 80% capacity even after 12 years.
Expansion of Battery-Swapping Stations
To further champion the cause of battery longevity, Nio has established over 2,300 swapping stations spanning China and Europe. So far, these stations have conducted more than 40 million battery swaps. The battery-swapping service concept has also attracted other auto industry players, with major firms like Geely (parent company of Volvo and Polestar) joining in Nio’s battery swapping initiative.
Developments in Battery Technology
Nio and CATL are not the only players concerned with battery longevity. Tech giant Samsung has also ventured into long-life batteries, introducing a 20-year battery on its development roadmap. In addition, Nio has launched a semi-solid-state battery that focuses on optimizing range. In a real-world demonstration, a Nio ET7 sedan equipped with a 150-kWh version of this battery achieved a driving range of 650 miles.
CATL’s Evolution
Initially, CATL was a cell supplier, but it has since broadened its horizons, dipping its toes into surrounding technology. It has begun promoting cell-to-pack construction as a substitute for current battery packs, marking an evolution in the company’s focus areas.
