Mercedes EV range could increase by 80% with new factorial solid-state technology

Solid-state batteries have long been seen as the next evolution in electric vehicle (EV) technology, offering greater energy density and safer performance compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries. In recent years, Mercedes-Benz has been working with battery firm Factorial to develop viable solid-state battery technology for EVs. After several years of collaboration, Factorial has announced significant progress in the form of its Solstice solid-state battery cell, which could potentially boost EV range by up to 80% through greater energy density.

The Solstice cell, developed in partnership with Mercedes, offers a range boost that is even greater than initially anticipated when test cells were provided to automakers in 2022. This breakthrough in energy density allows for smaller battery packs, reducing vehicle weight and increasing efficiency. Factorial’s solid-state cells, with a sulfide-based solid electrolyte, can also remain stable at high temperatures, reducing the need for complex cooling systems and lowering the risk of fires compared to liquid electrolytes.

Factorial’s commitment to solid-state battery technology was further demonstrated by the opening of a $50 million facility in a Boston suburb in 2023, which is touted as the largest U.S. solid-state EV battery plant. With the capacity to produce up to 200 megawatt-hours of batteries, this facility represents a significant step towards commercializing solid-state batteries for EVs.

In addition to Mercedes, other major automakers such as Volkswagen, Nissan, and Toyota are also investing in solid-state battery technology. Volkswagen has been a longtime supporter of QuantumScape, while Nissan and Toyota are developing solid-state cells in-house. Toyota has announced plans to begin manufacturing solid-state cells in 2026, aiming for a tenfold increase in EV production.

In summary, the partnership between Mercedes-Benz and Factorial represents a significant advancement in the development of solid-state batteries for EVs. The Solstice solid-state battery cell offers a substantial range boost and improved safety features, bringing the promise of next-generation battery technology closer to reality for automakers and consumers. With increasing investments and advancements in solid-state battery technology, the future of electric mobility looks brighter than ever.
