In 2025, Mercedes-Benz is introducing updates to its EQS electric sedan for its third model year, with a new 118.0-kwh battery pack representing a 9% increase in usable capacity. This upgrade is expected to increase the range of the vehicle, although specific EPA estimates have not been released. The new battery pack aims to push the maximum range of the EQS beyond its current 352 miles in single-motor rear-wheel-drive EQS 450+ form, potentially reaching up to 400 miles with additional efficiency gains.
In addition to the new battery pack, Mercedes has implemented new regenerative braking software and made changes to brake components to improve pedal feel. These improvements address previous criticisms of the EQS, enhancing the overall driving experience. The vehicle now features a more traditional look with a fake grille and hood ornament, reminiscent of gasoline-powered Mercedes sedans like the S-Class.
Inside, the EQS offers an Executive Interior Package with enhanced comfort features for rear-seat passengers, such as rapid-heating seats, neck and shoulder heating, and pneumatic adjustment of rear-seat depth. The vehicle also comes standard with the massive Hyperscreen display, offering a luxurious and high-tech interior experience.
This update follows Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius’s announcement in February, where the company delayed some of its EV targets while maintaining internal-combustion models in its lineup until the 2030s. The development of the EQS was accelerated in 2017, leading to an earlier release than originally planned. The EQS is part of Mercedes’ EVA 2 architecture, which also underpins other models like the EQS SUV and sedan, as well as the upcoming EQE SUV. These models are expected to receive similar updates in the future.
Looking ahead, Mercedes is working on its MMA platform, set to underpin compact and midsize EVs arriving later this year. The MMA platform, previewed by the Concept CLA-Class, emphasizes efficiency and features an 800-volt electrical architecture, offering significant improvements over the EVA 2 platform.
With these updates, Mercedes-Benz continues to push the boundaries of electric vehicle technology and luxury, setting the stage for a new generation of efficient and high-performance electric vehicles.
