In July, a team in the U.K. set a new Guinness World Record for the longest distance traveled by an electric vehicle (EV) on a single charge. The record-breaking journey covered 569 miles and 3,379 feet in a Ford Mustang Mach-E. Sponsored by fleet management company Webfleet, the team completed the feat in just over 24 hours.
Record-Breaking Journey in the Ford Mustang Mach-E
The record attempt was conducted using a single-motor Mach-E Premium model equipped with the larger Extended Range battery pack and 18-inch wheels with EV-specific tires from Bridgestone. The electric SUV was driven on U.K. public roads, including a stretch of 21 miles when the battery indicated 0% capacity. The Mach-E achieved an impressive average of 6.25 miles per kilowatt-hour, significantly exceeding the official WLTP rating of 3.8 miles per kilowatt-hour for this particular model in the U.K.
Challenges and Achievements
Although the team designed the route to simulate real-world driving conditions, achieving the record likely required extremely conservative driving practices. The Mach-E model used for the record attempt is rated at 372 miles of range under WLTP testing, with an EPA equivalent of 320 miles. The previous record was held by Chinese automaker Zeekr, with a journey of 563.971 miles in Hangzhou, China.
Innovations in EV Range
While other vehicles, such as the Nio ET7 sedan and the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX concept, have achieved impressive long-distance trips on a single charge, the Ford Mustang Mach-E’s record-breaking journey demonstrates the advancements in EV technology and efficiency. The Mercedes-Benz EQXX concept covered 746 miles in a trip from Germany to the U.K., showcasing potential engineering improvements for future EV models.
Implications for the Future of Electric Vehicles
The successful record attempt by the Ford Mustang Mach-E highlights the potential for EVs to travel longer distances on a single charge, providing more practical options for everyday use. As automakers continue to innovate and improve battery technology, the range and capabilities of electric vehicles are expected to increase, offering a viable alternative to traditional gasoline-powered vehicles. The achievement also underscores the growing interest and investment in sustainable transportation solutions to reduce emissions and combat climate change.
