BMW expands EV charger network, partners with Shell, surpassing Tesla

Introduction:

This article delves into the strategic partnership between auto giant BMW and Shell Recharge Solutions. This move is designed to provide BMW electric vehicle (EV) owners with greater accessibility to charging stations across multiple networks using the My BMW app. This agreement not only introduces simplicity in accessing different charging stations but also indicates a broader trend in the auto industry towards integrated charging solutions.

BMW’s Unique Partnership with Shell Recharge Solutions

Highlighting a significant step toward boosting EV convenience, BMW has partnered with Shell Recharge Solutions to assist its customers in gaining access to an expanded network of charging stations. This collaboration brings together BMW’s technical expertise and Shell’s expansive network, allowing more than 100,000 chargers to be accessible via the My BMW app. Any chargers within networks of ChargePoint, EVgo, EVConnect, Blink, and Shell are included.

Seamless Charging Experience for BMW Owners

Providing a streamlined user experience, customers can avoid the hassle of creating separate accounts or downloading different apps for each charging network. By registering with Shell Recharge and adding a credit card for payment, the My BMW app will allow users to charge their vehicles with minimal effort. The goal is to make it easier for EV drivers and promote widespread adaptation of electric vehicles in the market.

Shell Recharge Solutions: An Asset to North American EV Expansion

Formerly known as Greenlots, a business acquired by Shell in 2019, Shell Recharge Solutions has since been instrumental in expanding Shell’s portfolio of electric mobility solutions in North America. This foundation lets Shell continue to march towards a sustainable future by investing and diversifying its operations in clean energy and electric mobility.

A Growing Trend towards Charging Aggregation

BMW’s additional offer of free fast charging within the Electrify America network suggests a growing industry trend towards aggregation. This move deviates from the practice of offering free fast charging and instead focuses on increasing the ease and charging options for EV users during road trips. Ford’s plan to incorporate Tesla Superchargers into its route planning underlines this trend.

BMW’s Embrace of Rival Charging Networks

BMW has signalled its intentions of offering their customers access to the Tesla Supercharger network. The automaker disclosed plans to adopt the Tesla North American Charging Standard (NACS) port by 2025 and to produce adapters for BMW, Mini, and Rolls-Royce EVs with combined charging standard (CCS) ports in the same year. This move, along with BMW’s participation in the Ionna charging network and partnerships with Honda and Ford for smart-charging technology, hints at a more competitive and collaborative EV charging landscape.
