Volkswagen Adds Front Passenger Screens: A Welcome Addition

Volkswagen has officially bid farewell to the traditional Passat sedan in America, but the new Passat Pro is now taking its place. This new iteration of the family car is being launched in China in partnership with SAIC, alongside the Magotan, another sedan from FAW-VW. Despite the declining popularity of sedans in other markets, they are still a big hit in China. The Passat Pro comes with some unique features, including a display specifically for the front passenger, a feature typically reserved for high-end brands. However, the proliferation of screens and lack of physical buttons may raise concerns about distracted driving.

### Triple Display Setup
The Passat Pro boasts a triple display setup, including a large 11.6-inch screen for the front passenger, a 15-inch infotainment display, and a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster. While this setup may be visually appealing, it raises questions about the potential distraction it may pose to drivers.

### Size and Performance
Based on the MQB platform, the Passat Pro is larger than its European counterpart. It features a longer body, wider stance, and a generous wheelbase. The vehicle is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter gas engine producing 217 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. A smaller 1.5-liter engine option is also planned for the future.

### Coexistence with Old Model
SAIC-VW plans to continue selling the old Passat alongside the new Passat Pro for an unspecified period. This dual strategy allows for more options in the sedan market in China, where crossovers and SUVs have not completely dominated the market. Other sedans offered by Volkswagen in China include the Lamando L, Phideon, CC, Sagitar, Bora, and the Lavida.

### Launch and Availability
The Passat Pro made its debut at the 2024 Chengdu Motor Show and is set to go on sale in China later this year. As one of the few remaining markets where sedans still hold significant popularity, Volkswagen aims to capitalize on the demand for traditional three-box cars in China.
