Introduction:
In the automotive world, certain models become iconic despite having a relatively short lifespan. The BMW 8 Series is one such model, with only two generations offered by the German automaker. The first generation, known as the E31, lasted almost a decade in the 1990s before being retired due to poor sales. However, its sleek styling and performance capabilities have not been forgotten. Recently, Reyn Speed Shop unveiled a one-off creation during Monterey Car Week called the 858 CSL, which pays homage to the original 8 Series while adding modern upgrades.
Reviving the Legacy: The 858 CSL
Reyn Speed Shop’s 858 CSL is a stunning one-off creation that showcases a modern interpretation of the classic BMW 8 Series. The car features new carbon fiber body panels to reduce weight and earn the Competition Sport Lightweight badge. Additionally, it boasts new front and rear bumpers, wide boxy fender flares, bespoke headlights, and a vented hood. The overall design of the 858 CSL retains the essence of the original 8 Series while incorporating unique twists that set it apart.
Power and Performance: A Modern Engine Upgrade
One of the standout features of the 858 CSL is the replacement of the original engine with a 5.0-liter V-10 sourced from the E60-generation M5. Reyn Speed Shop took it a step further by increasing the engine’s displacement to 5.8 liters with a longer stroke. Paired with a six-speed manual transmission, the modified engine is expected to deliver impressive performance numbers. While specific figures have not been released, the original V-10 engine produced 500 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque, indicating that the 858 CSL is likely to offer even more power.
Unique Upgrades: A Modern Twist on a Classic
In addition to the engine swap, the 858 CSL features unique alloy wheels with original BMW center caps, further enhancing its vintage-modern aesthetic. The exterior modifications, including the carbon fiber body panels and redesigned bumpers, add a touch of aggression to the elegant lines of the original 8 Series. The result is a harmonious blend of classic design and contemporary upgrades that pays tribute to the legacy of the BMW 8 Series.
Legacy Continues: Preserving the 8 Series Heritage
The unveiling of the 858 CSL at Monterey Car Week is a testament to the enduring appeal of the BMW 8 Series. While the first generation may have been short-lived, its legacy lives on through projects like the 858 CSL. By combining classic design elements with modern performance enhancements, Reyn Speed Shop has created a unique tribute to a beloved automotive icon. The 858 CSL serves as a reminder that the 8 Series deserves more love and recognition in the automotive world.
