Ford continues its trend of resurrecting fabled European nameplates by introducing the new Capri, which is a departure from the fastback coupe sold in the past. This modern-day Capri is an electric SUV, based on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform, much like Ford’s own version of the ID.5. The Capri offers two different versions – a rear-wheel-drive model with a single electric motor producing 282 horsepower and 402 pound-feet of torque, and an all-wheel-drive model with a front-mounted motor delivering a combined 335 horsepower and 501 pound-feet of torque. The electric SUV has a usable energy content of 77 kWh, providing 390 miles of range in the WLTP cycle.
The new Capri features a sleek design that is a blend of SUV and sedan elements. Its dimensions match those of the VW ID.5, with standard 19-inch wheels that can be upgraded to 20- and 21-inch sets. The dual-motor variant offers faster acceleration and a larger battery capacity, with the ability to recharge from 10 to 80 percent in 26 minutes. Despite being heavier than its predecessors, the Capri offers practicality with 20.1 cubic feet of storage space behind the seats that can be expanded to 53.3 cubic feet by folding them down.
In terms of interior features, the Capri shares its cabin design with the Explorer, featuring a 14.6-inch touchscreen that moves up and down to reveal a hidden storage compartment. Production of the Capri takes place in Cologne, Germany, with pricing starting at €51,950 ($56,180) for the rear-wheel-drive model. The new Capri joins other historical Ford nameplates like the Puma and the Mustang Mach-E, both of which have also transitioned into SUV models.
Overall, Ford’s revival of the Capri nameplate represents a blend of heritage and modern technology, offering an electric SUV with sleek design and practical features that appeal to a new generation of car buyers. As the automotive industry continues to shift towards electrification and sustainability, the Capri showcases Ford’s commitment to embracing these changes while paying homage to its iconic past.
