Study shows that new technology features can be overwhelming for buyers

New cars are constantly being packed with more and more tech features, but according to J.D. Power’s 2024 U.S. Tech Experience Index Study, this might not always be a good thing. The study found that the abundance of tech features in new vehicles can be polarizing for owners, with some praising the tech and others finding it frustrating.

### Owners’ Reactions to Tech Features
The study ranked vehicle features based on a “problems per 100 vehicles” (PP100) scale, with gesture controls receiving a rating of 43.4 PP100. 21% of owners reported that this feature lacked functionality. Similarly, hands-free driving assistance systems received low scores for usefulness, and more advanced versions of these systems did not fare much better in the study. However, some advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) such as blind spot monitoring received favorable ratings. Owners appreciated features that addressed specific needs while driving, as opposed to introducing unnecessary innovation.

### Passenger Display Screens
On the other hand, few owners responded positively to passenger display screens, with many considering the feature as “not necessary.” Despite automakers including more screens in higher-end models, only 10% of vehicles regularly have front passengers, and dealers have struggled to educate owners on how to use these displays effectively.

### Tesla’s Tech Features
Tesla, known for being one of the most tech-forward automakers, has experienced some challenges as it expands beyond early adopters to mainstream buyers. Some features in Tesla’s repertoire have trended downward in this year’s study, with the direct driver monitoring system causing issues for owners.

### J.D. Power’s Analysis
J.D. Power collected responses from nearly 82,000 owners of 2024 model-year vehicles within 90 days of their purchase. The organization introduced a new return on investment analysis this year to help automakers determine the most valuable tech features for new vehicle models.

In conclusion, while new tech features can be exciting, it is essential for automakers to consider the needs and preferences of their customers to avoid overwhelming them with unnecessary features. By focusing on practicality and usability, automakers can enhance the overall driving experience for their customers.
