Review of 2024 VW Atlas Cross Sport Interior: A Mix of Progress and Setbacks

Volkswagen has instigated some notable changes in its 2024 range of models, particularly in the interiors. The attempts to modernize and streamline design elements have faced criticism, as decried against Volkswagen’s new minimalistic theme, which has seen the replacement of buttons with touch controls and a new understated aesthetic. Notably, this approach has frustrated consumers with the introduction of unlit, touch-based temperature and volume sliders. Volkswagen, however, seems to have taken these feedback onboard, reintroducing buttons and making other updates based on customer feedback.

Updated Interiors in the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas

The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport sport the latest interior design with fewer buttons, larger screens, and a sleek, minimalistic style. There are crucial similarities to the design concepts adopted in the ID.4 and GTI models. However, this novel product has faced criticism for its difficulty of use when compared to its predecessor, despite the latter being characterized by dated tech and a smaller touch screen.

Highlighting the Center Console

The new center console in the Atlas is a vast improvement in design. The replacement of the cumbersome gear lever with a compact toggle has resulted in several usability improvements, most notably the expansive storage beneath the floating console. Other upgrades include a secure wireless phone charger, USB-C ports that allow fast-charging and large cup holders.

Navigating the Touch Controls

One major point of contention with the new design is the touch controls for the climate and radio, which fail to illuminate in the dark, making night-time manipulation challenging. Updated versions of other models, such as the ID.4, GTI, and ID.7, feature lit controls. Furthermore, even when visible, users find the slider volume and temperature control cumbersome to use.

Steering Wheel Control Enhancements

The steering wheel controls have undergone successful modifications, featuring several easy-to-use buttons. This ease of use compensates for the infotainment control’s shortcomings. The controls for the digital cluster have been conveniently placed on the wheel, allowing drivers to visualize and navigate them easily.

Atlas Cross Sport: Aesthetics and Functionality

Despite the interface issues, the Atlas Cross Sport remains an aesthetically appealing and practical SUV. It features an extensive rear seat with a recline function for increased comfort and a two-tone leather interior, which pairs well with the Aurora Red Metallic paint of the tester. However, the new design also results in notable frustrations which have the potential to outbalance the good.

In conclusion, while Volkswagen’s attempt at modernization in their 2024 models, like the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport, is commendable, the execution needs refinement. Several usability issues, particularly involving the control interfaces, pose a risk of overshadowing the otherwise aesthetically pleasing and functional design.
