Rebuilding my vintage Ford Probe is even more enjoyable than cruising in it.

**Introduction**

Just a few months after acquiring his 1994 Ford Probe, the author has made significant progress in restoring the vehicle to its former glory. From fixing the idling issue to addressing the rust problem and procuring numerous parts, the author is dedicated to seeing this project through. With summer approaching, the author looks forward to enjoying the fruits of his labor by taking the Probe out for weekend drives.

**Fixing the idling issue**

Upon acquiring the vehicle, the author discovered that the LPG system had been improperly installed, resulting in an uneven operation on petrol and an inability to run on LPG. By removing the LPG system, replacing components, and installing new spark plugs and cables, the author was able to improve the idling of the car to 95% of its factory tune. Further upgrades are planned to achieve complete idling smoothness.

**The rust situation is getting worse**

While progress has been made in fixing the idling issue, the rust problem remains largely unaddressed. Rust was discovered in various areas of the car, particularly around the LPG reservoir in the boot. Plans are in place for a comprehensive rust remediation process in the autumn, involving the disassembly of the suspension and the application of protective coatings.

**Parts, parts, parts… and then more parts**

Acquiring new and salvaged components is crucial to the restoration project. The author has spent over £1,000 on new parts, including brake components, engine belts, sensors, and mounts. Salvaged components such as interior trim panels, a window control switch, and front seats in good condition have also been secured. Communication with brokers from various countries has allowed the author to source additional parts needed for the project.

**Commencing with the inconsequential**

Although the rust problem remains a priority, the author has taken steps to keep the car operational for the summer season. This includes installing new summer tires, refurbishing the wheels, and detailing the interior. Further detailing of the engine bay and exterior will be done in the final stages of the restoration project.

**What’s the plan for the summer?**

With the car in better condition and operational, the author looks forward to enjoying weekend drives in the Probe during the summer months. The author finds joy in conducting maintenance and repairs on the vehicle, aided by a repair manual and his mechanical engineering background. The upcoming season holds promise for continued improvement and enjoyment as the author continues to work on the restoration project.
