Mercedes-AMG’s Latest GT43 Coupe is Powered by a Four-Cylinder Engine

Mercedes-AMG has introduced the new GT43, which features a four-cylinder engine and serves as the entry-level variant in the GT Coupe lineup. Despite the smaller engine size, the GT43 packs a punch with 416 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, thanks to a mild-hybrid setup. However, the decision to use a four-cylinder engine in a high-performance coupe like the GT is a tough pill to swallow for enthusiasts. The GT43 can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 4.6 seconds and has a top speed of 174 mph.

The GT43 shares the Formula 1-derived electric exhaust gas turbocharger with the SL43 and is fitted with a nine-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, sending power to the rear axle. The new coupe is a more comfortable 2+2 grand tourer than its predecessor, which was a dedicated two-seater sports car. Despite the increase in overall weight due to its larger size, the GT43 is expected to be substantially lighter than its V8-powered counterpart due to the smaller engine and rear-wheel-drive layout.

In addition to the GT43, the 2.0-liter engine is also used in other high-end models like the C63 and GLC63. Internally codenamed M139l, this engine is mounted longitudinally in these models, producing impressive power figures. The GT43 will be available in Europe with the option for a 2+2 seating arrangement and all-wheel steering. It is expected to be priced lower than the GT55 coupe sold in the US, making it an attractive option for those looking for a high-performance coupe with a smaller engine.

Despite the initial skepticism surrounding the use of a four-cylinder engine in a high-performance coupe, the GT43 offers a unique blend of power, comfort, and practicality, making it a compelling choice for buyers looking for a more affordable entry point into the AMG GT Coupe lineup. With its impressive performance figures and luxurious features, the GT43 is set to make a mark in the competitive sports car segment.
