In a car graveyard in Sparks, Nevada, lies a 1987 Ram 50 pickup truck that has undergone a unique engine swap. Originally sold as the Dodge Ram 50, this compact pickup was equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. However, at some point, a Chrysler small-block V8 engine was transplanted into the truck, creating a powerful and unique vehicle.
The 1980s were a great time for small pickups in the United States, with the Ram 50 competing with its near-identical Mitsubishi Mighty Max twin for sales. However, as the decade came to a close, the demand for larger cabs and more creature comforts led to the downfall of these compact trucks.
Despite the popularity of engine swaps in the automotive enthusiast community, it is uncommon to see a Chrysler V8 engine in a vehicle like the Ram 50. Typically, Chevrolet or Ford V8 engines are used due to their narrower dimensions. However, in this case, the Chrysler LA-series V8 found its way into the engine bay of the Ram 50 without requiring any major modifications to the vehicle’s structure.
The exact specifications of the Chrysler V8 engine in this Ram 50 are unknown, but it is likely either a 318 or 360 cubic inch displacement engine. With the addition of performance upgrades such as an Edelbrock intake manifold and a new camshaft, the engine’s power output is estimated to be between 300 and 350 horsepower.
The engine swap also necessitated modifications to the truck’s exterior, including cutting a hole in the hood to accommodate an air scoop. While this may have compromised the truck’s sleeper status, it undoubtedly added to its overall aesthetic appeal.
Despite the potential challenges of driving a high-powered, rear-wheel-drive pickup truck with an automatic transmission, the end result is sure to be an exhilarating and entertaining driving experience. While passing emissions tests in states like California might prove difficult, in Nevada, this unique and powerful Ram 50 is sure to turn heads and provide endless enjoyment for its lucky owner.
