Introduced ten years ago, the Ferrari F355 is a car that is adored by collectors despite its expensive and complicated flaws. One UK company, Evoluto Automobili, has taken on the challenge of rectifying these issues while also giving the F355 a modern update in terms of design. ### Revamping the Heart of the F355
Evoluto has focused on solving common issues with the Ferrari F355’s 3.5-liter five-valve V8 engine, such as soft valve guides, failing exhaust manifolds, and cracked quill shafts. By tearing down the engine and making modifications like CNC porting the heads, installing larger inlet camshafts, and a full titanium exhaust, Evoluto has managed to increase the horsepower from 380 to 420 while improving reliability. The company has also milled a new, stronger quill shaft to reduce vibration and power loss, addressing a specific concern raised by Ferrari mechanics.
### Enhancing Performance and Handling
In addition to engine upgrades, Evoluto has implemented a new suspension system that widens the track slightly for better stability. The car now features Brembo slotted discs with six-piston calipers in the front, four in the back, and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires to maintain a playful rear end. These improvements, coupled with a stiffer chassis thanks to additional spot welds and carbon bracing, aim to enhance the overall performance and handling of the F355.
### Redesigning the Exterior
Not only has Evoluto worked on improving the mechanics of the F355, but they have also collaborated with Ian Callum’s design consultancy to give the car a fresh new look. Callum has designed a set of all-carbon-fiber body panels that accentuate the F355’s natural curves, featuring LED pop-up headlights, carbon splitters, and a sleek rear fascia with four LED taillights. The carbon panels contribute to a weight reduction from 3,135 pounds to 2,756 pounds in stock spec, highlighting the company’s commitment to both performance and aesthetics.
### Customization and Pricing
Evoluto plans to offer 55 of these revamped F355 models with a starting price of £690,000 ($887,333 U.S.) per car. The interior of the demo car showcases a luxurious blue Alcantara finish, with customers having the option to personalize their vehicles with different materials and colors. Half of the allotted cars have already been sold, with the full debut set to take place during Monterey Car Week.
### Preserving the Essence of the F355
Despite the significant upgrades made by Evoluto, the essence of the original Ferrari F355 remains intact. Amjad Ali, a key figure in the project, emphasizes the importance of maintaining the car’s character and accessibility on public roads while still delivering a thrilling driving experience. The company’s goal is not to outperform newer models like the Ferrari 458 but to pay homage to the classic F355 and provide a unique driving experience reminiscent of a bygone era.
