BMW Advances Towards Next Phase of EV Transition with the Launch of 2026 BMW iX3 and i3

BMW, the iconic German automobile manufacturer, is transitioning to a dual-platform strategy for its internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) models. This transformation is poised to see the arrival of the i3 Sedan and iX3 SUV, evolving BMW’s brand portfolio and strategy in the market. However, this move might also mean the end of the road for the Z4 model. As it evolves, the Alpina sub-brand is poised to take on heavyweights in the luxury car segment — Bentley and Mercedes-Maybach. All these changes underscore BMW’s intensive efforts to adapt to a rapidly evolving automotive market.

Plan for Transitioning to Electric

In 2025, BMW plans to launch its electric-battery Neue Klasse platform, which will pioneer the next generation of iX3 and i3 models. These models are designed to offer battery-customized varieties of the current X3 and 3-series vehicles. It’s expected that these electric versions will launch for the 2026 model year.

Dual Platform Strategy

The ICE variants will use the CLAR II platform that currently does double duty for the 5- and 7-series as well as the electric i5 and i7 models. BMW plans to continue its dual platform strategy until 2035, the target year for the company’s transition to a fully electric lineup.

Future of Coupes and Convertibles

Some of BMW’s enduring models, namely the Z4 and the 8-series coupe and convertible, might disappear from the market. The 8-series lineup is speculated to continue only in the form of a four-door Gran Coupe. Insiders have also suggested that the next generation 8-series could spawn an electric i8 equivalent.

Upcoming Alpina and the Fate of Rolls-Royce

BMW aims to reposition its Alpina sub-brand to compete more effectively with Mercedes-Maybach. As part of this strategy, the Rolls-Royce Ghost is not expected to have a successor. Instead, Rolls-Royce will likely focus on exclusivity, with potential plans for a droptop variant of the electric Spectre coupe and other custom cars.

Outlook and Strategic Direction

BMW’s strategy offers an indicative framework of how traditional car manufacturers are transitioning towards more sustainable and electrified models while phasing out older models that did not meet market expectations. Although the transition might seem drastic, BMW’s commitment to a dual-platform strategy offers a balanced approach, allowing the company to cater to a diverse market that is still in the process of embracing electric mobility.
