Alpine A290 Electric Hot Hatch Launches Bid for Mainstream Appeal

In May 2023, Alpine, a subsidiary of Renault, unveiled a concept car called the A290_β, hinting at its return to the hot hatch segment. The A290_β featured a futuristic yet slightly retro design that was closely related to the Renault 5 Prototype concept from 2021. Following this preview, Alpine announced a major model offensive, revealing plans for seven new cars to be launched by 2030. The first of these new models is the A290, an electric hot hatch that will be available in various trims, including a limited-build Premiere Edition. This article will delve into the details of the A290, exploring its features, performance, and unique characteristics.

### Design and Performance
The A290 is equipped with a single motor on the front axle, delivering an instant 221 pound-feet of torque across all trims. The motor has been tuned to provide different power outputs in each trim level, ranging from 177 horsepower in the GT and GT Premium trims to 215 hp in the GT Performance and GTS trims. To unleash the full power of the motor, drivers can engage the Overtake button on the steering wheel, activating a 10-second power boost. Additionally, the A290 features a regenerative braking system, allowing drivers to choose from four different regen levels using the RCH button on the steering wheel.

### Battery and Range
The A290 is powered by a 52-kWh battery, providing an estimated range of 236 miles on Europe’s WLTP cycle. The battery can be fast-charged at a maximum rate of 100 kW, allowing for a quick charge from 15% to 80% in just 30 minutes. With a fast charge, the A290 can add approximately 90 miles of range in just 15 minutes, making it convenient for long drives.

### Interior and Features
Inside, the A290 boasts a modern and tech-forward interior, featuring a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster and a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen. Even the base GT trim comes equipped with luxurious features such as 19-inch wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport EV tires, LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, heated sport seats, and a Nappa leather-wrapped steering wheel. The GT Premium and GT Performance trims offer additional upgrades in terms of luxury and performance, while the top GTS trim comes with exclusive features and unique design elements.

### Premiere Edition and Pricing
Alpine will release a limited-run A290 GTS Premiere Edition, with only 1,955 units available in tribute to the company’s birth year. The Premiere Edition will be offered in three themes: Beta, La Grise, and La Bleue. Pricing for the A290 has not been disclosed yet, but it is expected to command a premium over the Renault 5 sister hatch, which starts at around €30,000 ($32,398 U.S.). The A290 is set to mark Alpine’s entry into mainstream segments and showcase the brand’s commitment to innovation and electrification in the automotive industry.
