E-fuel plant should set an example

One of the key players in this movement is Porsche, which aims to scale production of synthetic fuel as part of its strategy to combat climate change. In a recent interview with Autocar, Porsche’s research and development boss, Michael Steiner, expressed confidence that synthetic fuels, also known as e-fuels, will play a crucial role in reducing emissions from ordinary vehicles in the coming years.

Porsche has already taken a significant step towards achieving this goal by opening a synthetic fuel pilot plant in Chile in 2022. The plant produces a gasoline alternative by combining hydrogen with carbon dioxide captured from the air, with the entire process powered by renewable energy. Steiner believes that this plant will serve as a role model as production of synthetic fuels scales up to displace a significant amount of conventional gasoline use by the end of the decade.

A study by environmental group Transport & Environment in 2021 estimated that synthetic fuels cause as much pollution as regular gasoline, raising questions about their overall sustainability. Additionally, the production and distribution of synthetic fuels require infrastructure similar to fossil fuels, which may limit their efficiency compared to charging an EV.

### Price Competitiveness and Industry Adoption

Another challenge for the widespread adoption of synthetic fuels is their cost competitiveness with conventional fossil fuels. However, this may not be a significant concern for luxury automakers like Porsche and Ferrari, which are both exploring the potential of synthetic fuels for their high-end supercars. In addition to these luxury brands, Toyota, Subaru, and Mazda are also investigating synthetic fuels as a potential solution to keep combustion engines alive, especially in more affordable vehicles.
