The Polestar 3 electric midsize SUV has begun production at Volvo’s plant near Charleston, South Carolina, marking the start of customer deliveries in the U.S. The Polestar 3 joins the related Volvo EX90, which has been in production at the same plant since June. The U.S.-built Polestar 3s will be sold locally and in Europe, with production also taking place at Volvo’s plant in Chengdu, China.
Production in Chengdu was initially supposed to start in the fourth quarter of 2023 but was delayed due to software-related issues, which also affected the start of production for the XC90. Both SUVs are based on Volvo’s SPA2 platform designed for EVs, with the Polestar offering two rows while the Volvo has a third row.
The Polestar 3 in the U.S. comes with a dual-motor electric powertrain with 489 hp as standard and 517 hp with an available Performance Pack option. Acceleration from 0-60 mph is estimated at 4.9 seconds standard and 4.6 seconds with the Performance Pack, with a top speed of 130 mph in both configurations. The SUV is equipped with a 111-kwh battery estimated to provide up to 315 miles of EPA-rated range. Pricing for the Polestar 3 in the U.S. starts at $74,800, including a $1,400 destination charge.
Polestar also has the Polestar 4 compact crossover in production in China, with plans to start production in South Korea to avoid steep tariffs when bringing the vehicle into the U.S. The Korean-built Polestar 4s will benefit from a free-trade agreement, ensuring they are not subjected to any tariffs.
