Jeep officially announces Gladiator 4xe PHEV pickup and considers Recon hybrid variant

Jeep is expanding its lineup with the introduction of new electrified options for its vehicles. The Jeep Gladiator, a popular pickup truck model, will soon be available in a 4xe plug-in hybrid variant. Jeep North America CEO William Peffer confirmed this news in a LinkedIn post, stating that the hybrid model will hit the market later next year. It is expected to share a powertrain with the Wrangler 4xe, which was the top-selling plug-in hybrid in the U.S. in 2022 and recently received a price cut as part of a mid-cycle refresh.

The Gladiator 4xe will be the third plug-in hybrid offering in Jeep’s lineup, joining the Wrangler 4xe and the Grand Cherokee 4xe. The Gladiator, based on the Wrangler, was first introduced for the 2020 model year and recently received updates for the 2024 model year, including a new Tuscadero pink color option.

In addition to the Gladiator 4xe, Jeep is also considering hybrid powertrains for its upcoming Recon SUV. The Recon will be one of the brand’s first two electric vehicles for the U.S., alongside the Wagoneer S EV, which is set to go on sale in the fall. While the Wagoneer S will be fully electric, Jeep is exploring hybrid options for the Recon, according to Jeep brand boss Antonio Filosa.

Filosa mentioned that the Recon will be built on a versatile platform, indicating that a pure internal-combustion powertrain is unlikely. While the plan is to make the Recon all-electric, Filosa stated that a hybrid powertrain is a possibility if Jeep decides to change course. The automaker has seen success with internal-combustion versions of the European-market Avenger crossover, leading them to consider similar alternatives for the Recon.

Despite the initial plan to make the Recon all-electric, Jeep’s focus on alternative powertrains reflects a broader trend in the industry. As EV sales growth may be slowing, automakers are exploring a variety of electrified options to meet consumer demand and regulatory requirements. Jeep’s decision to introduce hybrid variants of their vehicles demonstrates their commitment to sustainability and innovation within the industry.

In conclusion, Jeep’s plans to introduce a 4xe plug-in hybrid variant for the Gladiator and explore hybrid powertrains for the Recon showcase the brand’s dedication to electrification. With a strong lineup of electrified options, Jeep is poised to meet the evolving needs of consumers while staying at the forefront of automotive technology.
