Introduction:
As a staff writer at Motor1, I spend a lot of time creating stories about cars. However, when I’m not writing, I have a passion for photography, particularly capturing old cars on film. Since moving to Seattle last year, I have been exploring the city with a loaded film camera in hand, capturing the unique scenes and interesting old cars that I come across. This hobby of mine has not only allowed me to relax and unwind but has also led to a cohesive project of showcasing vintage automobiles in a modern setting.
Love for Old Cars
One consistent theme in my recent photography work has been the focus on old cars. Seattle’s lack of road salt and temperate climate have preserved many old and uncommon vehicles, making it a haven for vintage automobile enthusiasts like myself. From classic Chrysler K Cars to Volkswagen Buses, the city is full of interesting scenes with these unique vehicles as the backdrop.
Return to Film Photography
While I have been an avid photographer for 17 years, I had veered towards digital photography due to the convenience it offered. However, returning to film photography has been a refreshing change of pace. Shooting on film forces me to be more intentional with each shot, and the editing process is simpler and more enjoyable. Unlike my digital workflow, where I have a backlog of editing work, film photography allows me to savor the process of capturing moments and relishing in the anticipation of developing the film.
Nostalgic Charm of Film
Film photography has a unique ability to transform recent scenes into nostalgic, vintage vignettes. With the right car as the subject, even photos taken last month can resemble snapshots from decades ago. This timeless quality adds a touch of nostalgia and charm to my photography, especially when paired with old and unusual cars that I come across in the city.
Lab Experience and Development
One of the joys of shooting on film is the process of getting photos developed at the lab. I entrust Moody’s, a local lab in Seattle, with my film development work, and the experience of receiving back physical prints is a delight. It feels like a treat to hold the developed film in my hands, knowing that each frame holds a unique and authentic moment captured on film.
Weekend Photography Project
Photographing old cars on film has evolved into a weekend hobby project that brings me joy and relaxation outside of my writing work. Exploring Seattle’s streets with my film camera and discovering vintage automobiles has become a cohesive and enjoyable endeavor that allows me to blend my love for cars and photography seamlessly. I hope this glimpse into my weekend hobby brings a bit of joy to your own weekend as well.
