The History of the Mazda RX-Evolv Concept
The Mazda RX-Evolv made its debut at the 1999 Tokyo Motor Show, showcasing a bulbous design, strange doors, and a newly branded Renesis rotary engine. This concept previewed the RX-8 that would later go on sale in 2003, establishing the car’s overall styling ethos. Despite facing financial trouble, Mazda continued to develop the concept in secret, eventually leading to the RX-Evolv in 1999 and the final RX-8 Concept in 2001.
Design and Features of the RX-Evolv
The Mazda RX-Evolv featured odd, pillar-less rear doors that helped retain its coupe-like shape while seating four people. It was powered by a 276-horsepower twin-rotor rotary engine placed behind the front axle for optimal weight distribution. The concept also included futuristic features such as an ID access card for unlocking doors and altering driving characteristics based on the driver’s skill, as well as an Active Cornering Brake system.
The Future of the Rotary Engine
Mazda has recently relaunched a new rotary engine development group, with the aim of designing “attractive cars that excite customers.” The company has hinted at a hybrid future for the rotary engine, as seen in the Iconic SP concept. While a purely rotary-powered sports car may not be in Mazda’s future plans, the rotary engine will likely power similar high-performance vehicles.
Where is the RX-Evolv Now?
Mazda still has the RX-Evolv concept, which will be displayed at the Automobile Council 2024 in Chiba, Japan. The exhibit’s theme is “History and Future of Rotary Sports Car Concept,” showcasing the concept alongside the Iconic SP and bridging the gap between the rotary engine’s past and future.
Conclusion
The Mazda RX-Evolv concept was a significant turning point in the history of the rotary engine, previewing the future of Mazda’s sports cars. While a purely rotary-powered sports car may not be in the cards, the legacy of the RX-Evolv lives on in Mazda’s commitment to designing innovative and exciting vehicles for the future.
