The Sultan of Brunei’s Rare LM002 Wagon – A Unique Piece of Automotive History
The Sultan of Brunei’s family is known for their extravagant car collection, which includes unique and rare vehicles that are not available to regular customers. One such vehicle is the LM002 wagon, a converted estate car from a pickup truck. This special LM002 is believed to be one of only three ever made, with Lamborghini’s stamp of approval making it even more unique.
Rare and Heavy LM002 Wagon
The regular LM002 is already a rare sight, with only about 300 models built between 1986 and 1993. The conversion from a truck to a wagon added approximately 1,100 pounds to the vehicle, resulting in a curb weight of over 6,600 pounds. Powered by a V-12 engine from the Countach, the fuel consumption is expectedly high for this off-road vehicle. Despite its weight and power, this 1989 LM002 has only been driven about 6,200 miles, making it a well-preserved piece of automotive history.
Officially Sanctioned Conversion
The LM002 wagon was not converted to the wagon body style by Lamborghini, but the automaker officially sanctioned the conversion. Salvatore Diomante, Bizzarrini’s factory manager in the 1960s, performed the transformation. The Sultan of Brunei only drove the vehicle for approximately 1,100 miles before it was purchased by former BMW and Volkswagen CEO Bernd Pischetsrieder. Following another ownership change, a Swedish woman used it as a practical vehicle to drive her children to school.
Negotiating for Rare Tires
As a 35-year-old vehicle, the LM002 is in need of fresh tires, but Motikon is currently negotiating for a set. However, there is reportedly only one set in the world available, with a price tag of about $54,000. Despite its age and rare tire situation, the LM002 wagon continues to captivate automotive enthusiasts with its unique conversion, limited production, and storied history.
In conclusion, the Sultan of Brunei’s LM002 wagon is a one-of-a-kind vehicle with a fascinating backstory and unique features. From its rare conversion to its limited production numbers, this off-road vehicle stands out as a special piece of automotive history. Despite its age and maintenance needs, the LM002 wagon continues to spark interest and admiration among collectors and enthusiasts alike.
