**Introduction**
After years of searching through online marketplaces, I finally got my hands on a 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII. Bought from the original owner, this car may be one of the last totally stock Evo in existence. Despite its factory condition, years of daily driving in New York City left it with numerous issues. However, I am thrilled to own such an iconic car and have been working on bringing it back to its former glory. Here is a breakdown of my experience with this legendary car.
**Is It Really Stock?**
The Evo VIII I purchased is surprisingly stock, right down to the airbox, wheels, and even the radio. However, issues such as the missing Recaro buckets and deteriorating tires reveal the wear and tear it has endured over the years. Despite these imperfections, the car still retains its original charm and character.
**So What’s Wrong With It?**
Upon closer inspection, I discovered various problems with the Evo VIII, including blown suspension, worn-out shifter, and deteriorating bushings. The car was in rough shape and required significant maintenance and repairs to make it roadworthy again. Despite these challenges, I was determined to restore the car to its former glory.
**What Have You Fixed So Far?**
To address the car’s issues, I replaced the suspension with used Bilstein shocks and springs, refreshed the brakes, and performed necessary maintenance tasks like changing the engine oil and replacing worn-out parts. Taking the car to a specialized shop for more extensive repairs, including fixing the rear differential bushings and rebuilding the shifter linkage, significantly improved its performance.
**So What’s Next?**
Looking ahead, I plan to switch out the winter tires for a more suitable set, possibly opting for a cheap set of summers or OEM Lancer Evo wheels. With most of the major repairs completed, I am excited to clock more miles on the Evo VIII and experience its full potential on the road. A future trip on gravel roads promises to be a thrilling adventure in this iconic car. Stay tuned for more updates on my journey with the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII.
