Subaru of America has announced a recall of 118,723 wagons and sedans in the United States due to an issue that could prevent airbags from deploying in a crash. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) disclosed that certain Outback and Legacy models manufactured between 2020 and 2022 are included in the recall. The problem is related to a capacitor in the sensors for the Occupant Detection System (ODS) that may crack and short-circuit, potentially leading to the front passenger airbag failing to deploy during a collision. While Subaru has received 253 warranty claims associated with the issue, no injuries have been reported as a result.
Recall Details
Dealerships will replace the ODS sensors on the front passenger seat at no cost to owners to resolve the problem. Affected vehicle owners will receive notification within 60 days, and they can also check if their car is subject to the recall by entering the VIN on the NHTSA’s recall website.
Subaru’s Response
Subaru of America is taking proactive measures to address the safety concern identified by the NHTSA. By initiating this recall and providing free repairs, the automaker is demonstrating its commitment to ensuring the well-being of its customers. Additionally, Subaru is working to keep the public informed about the issue and the steps that need to be taken to rectify it.
Safety Concerns
The potential failure of the front passenger airbag to deploy in a crash could lead to serious injuries or fatalities for occupants in the affected Subaru vehicles. Airbags are an essential safety feature designed to protect individuals in the event of a collision, and any malfunction that prevents their deployment poses a significant risk.
Importance of ODS Sensors
The Occupant Detection System (ODS) is a crucial component in modern vehicle safety systems, as it helps determine the presence and size of occupants in the front passenger seat. This information is used to adjust airbag deployment and ensure that the appropriate level of protection is provided to occupants based on their characteristics.
Vehicle Safety Recalls
Recalls are a common occurrence in the automotive industry, as manufacturers strive to address potential safety issues promptly and prevent accidents. Vehicle owners should always stay informed about recalls that may affect their cars and take action to address any identified problems to maintain a safe driving experience.
