Hyundai and Kia Recall Over 147,100 Vehicles in the U.S. Due to Damaged Charging Unit
Introduction:
Hyundai Motor America and Kia America have issued a recall for a total of 147,100 vehicles in the United States due to a damaged charging unit, as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Thursday. The recall affects specific models from Hyundai and Kia, with the potential for a loss of drive power that could increase the risk of a crash.
Hyundai will be recalling 98,878 vehicles, including certain models from 2022-2024 such as the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6, Genesis GV60, Genesis GV70 Electrified, and Genesis GV80 Electrified. The Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) in these vehicles may become damaged over time from transient high voltage and thermal cycling, resulting in the 12-volt battery not charging properly.
Kia will recall 48,232 vehicles, impacting specific EV6 models. The ICCU in these vehicles may also become damaged, leading to issues such as audible warning chimes and various warning lights illuminating, signaling a potential problem with the charging system.
The NHTSA has highlighted the safety concerns associated with the damaged ICCU, noting that a loss of drive power can significantly increase the risk of a crash. For both Hyundai and Kia vehicles, dealers will inspect and replace the ICCU and its fuse as needed, in addition to updating the ICCU software to prevent future damage.
For owners of Hyundai and Kia vehicles affected by the recall, it is crucial to contact their respective dealerships immediately to schedule an inspection and necessary repairs. Ignoring the recall could pose serious safety risks and potential damage to the vehicle’s charging system.
In conclusion, Hyundai and Kia are taking proactive measures to address a critical issue with the charging units of certain vehicles, prioritizing the safety of their customers. Vehicle owners must act promptly to ensure their vehicles are inspected and repaired to prevent any potential risks on the road. By following the recall instructions provided by the manufacturers, drivers can maintain the safety and integrity of their vehicles.
